Got a raging headache on the juice day and they told me it was toxins leaving

The different kinds · started Aug 4, 2026 · 6 replies · 340 views

Back from a five day cleanse thing and I want a sanity check from people who are not selling anything.

Day one was fine. Day two was a juice only day and by about three in the afternoon I had the worst headache I have had in years, plus I was shaking a bit and could not follow the talk at all. Mentioned it to one of the staff and got a very serene "that is the toxins releasing, it means it is working, drink more water". Everyone around me nodded like this was obvious.

Thing is, I normally have four or five coffees a day and I had had precisely none since the Sunday. Am I being cynical or is that the more likely explanation. It went away completely by day four which nobody commented on.

Four or five a day to zero overnight. Yes. I would put money on the coffee.

Same thing happened to me at a place in the mountains and the phrasing was almost word for word, "that is your body offloading". It is a bit of a script. What annoys me is not that they were wrong, it is that a wrong explanation stopped anyone asking whether I actually needed to eat something.

You are not being cynical. Going from four or five coffees a day to none, abruptly, is a well recognised cause of exactly the headache you describe, and it typically appears within the first day or two and resolves over the following couple of days, which fits your timeline closely. Add a sharp drop in food intake on the same day and you have a very ordinary explanation that requires no toxins at all.

I want to be careful here, because I cannot tell you what caused your particular headache and I was not there. What I can say is that the explanation you were given is not a physiological description of anything. The liver and kidneys process and clear waste continuously, every day, whether or not you are drinking juice, and there is no mechanism by which a restricted day releases stored toxins into the bloodstream and produces a headache. The honest account of what a cleanse week does and does not do is in detox retreats.

The reason I mind about this, professionally, is not the vocabulary. It is that "this symptom proves it is working" is a framing that cannot be falsified, and it converts a signal into a badge. Feeling shaky and unable to concentrate is information. On a restricted day it might mean caffeine withdrawal, it might mean low blood sugar, it might mean dehydration, it might occasionally mean something that needs attention. Staff who reinterpret all of those as progress have removed their own ability to notice the one that matters. A competent programme treats a guest who is shaking and cannot follow a session as someone to check on, not as someone to congratulate.

Two practical things for anyone reading before a similar booking. First, taper caffeine over the week before you travel rather than stopping on arrival, which removes most of this problem for nothing. Second, ask in advance what the restricted days actually involve and who is supervising them, because juice only days and structured fasts sit in a different category from a light menu, and they are not appropriate for everyone, particularly anyone pregnant, managing a health condition, or on medication that is taken with food. That question belongs with your own doctor before you book, not with the retreat. There is more on the food side of this in wellness retreat food.

The taper advice is the single most useful thing I tell people before a week with me and it gets ignored roughly every time. Two coffees instead of four, then one, then half. It is boring and it works, and it means your first two days are actually spent on the thing you paid for rather than in a dark room.

Thanks both. Slightly deflating to learn the profound purification event was in fact caffeine, but I would rather know.

The thing I keep coming back to is Neil's point. If everything is proof it is working then nothing is a reason to check on anyone. I did not need medical attention, I needed a sandwich and a paracetamol, and the framing made both of those feel like failing the programme.

This has genuinely changed what I am going to ask the place I am looking at. Their site talks a lot about elimination and I had read that as poetic rather than as a claim. Going to email and ask, in plain words, what happens on the fasting days and who is watching. If the answer is another paragraph about toxins I will book somewhere else.
